Our story

Researcherssun%c%sunhave proven that industrialized countries don’t sleep enoughsun%z%sun. We challenged ourselves to change that, starting nowsun%i%sun.

We’re two brothers, Laurent and Pierre. We started our careers in different fields. After having finished his law and entrepreneurship studies, Laurent worked for a big law firm. He spent his days defending banks. In terms of fulfilling his childhood dream, he was pretty far off. Pierre is an electromechanical engineer specialized in energy. He worked as a consultant and spent his days making electric network simulations for a big European energy supplier. In the middle of an early-life crisis, he fed the crazy ambition that his actions had a real impact on the world.

And then, there is our father, Jean-Benoit Martinot, who spent a large part of his career researching on respiratory issues, partly at RespiSom, a medical centre for research in the field of respiration that he co-founded in 2014. It was in 2002 that he decided to focus his research on sleep, a topic he had always been passionate about. Since then, he has been at the head of a reputed sleep clinic within the Catholic University of Louvain. One day, weary of our respective careers, we were discussing the future when he told us: “There is still so much to do in the field of sleep science…”

Guided by his advice and eager to help people sleep better, we surrounded ourselves with sleep experts and got down to business. We read scientific reports and realized that sleep science is still pretty new and full of unanswered questions. We discovered that it’s a massive health issue whose consequences are completely unknown by the general public (just like cigarettes 60 years ago). We studied every product that was marketed with the ambition of helping people sleep better. Confronted to “sleep trackers” we were a bit ill at ease: tracking sleep didn’t really talk to us. We’re not control freaks, and we already felt that learning how to sleep better had something to do with knowing how to let go. Last but not least, we witnessed hospital tests. When seeing dozens of patients plugged in to electrodes from head to toe and hearing about the extensive waiting lists, it just clicked. There must be another way. And if there was no other way yet, it was up to us to find one.

We moved in next to RespiSom, and started to conceive a device as easy to use as a sleep tracker but equipped with such innovative technology that it would punch well above its weight. A device able to diagnose our sleep, clinically certified and easy to set up from our own bed. After intense research, we came up with the Sunrise technology: a sensor placed on the chin that measures the mandible movements and gives a faithful report of what the brain does to keep us asleep. Sunrise makes sure we sleep well or diagnoses physiological, environmental and behavioural sleep disorders. But we were not going to stop there. We also developed an app that, whatever the outcome, enables you to keep or find a relaxed sleep again. We don’t leave you alone with your nightmares, we hold your hand until the sun rises.

How it works

The name came pretty naturally to us. It’s at sunrise that the most critical hours of sleep take place, the ones that consolidate our memory. Laurent took the helm of the company while Pierre took charge of technological development. Soon, the team grew and we welcomed Antoine, software developer, Stephane, in charge of our patients during our clinical studies, Gaëtan & Colin, developers, Clément, our link with the clinical world, Charlotte, operations manager, François, in charge of quality audit, Valérie, communications manager and Nam, IA expert. In any case, since the beginning of this crazy adventure, we haven’t always been able to sleep till sunrise, but as soon as we make sure you can, we promise we will.
