Polysomnography is the reference in terms of sleep tests nowadays. Electrodes placed on the head, face, chest, hands and legs monitor several factors such as breathing, CO2 levels, oxygen saturation, snoring, heart rate, position and movements. The simultaneous reading of all these signals enables the detection of sleep disorders. It is a complicated process to automate: an expert needs to analyze the data in every 30-second section recorded throughout the night.

Sleep trackers have been trending for the past ten years. Their users can measure certain aspects of their sleep to regain some control and improve it. These devices are placed on the finger or the wrist and measure oxygen levels and the pulse. The medical community is overtly sceptical towards these tools.

Indeed, the data recorded by sleep trackers are a long way away from the source of the problem thus revealing multiple weaknesses. For instance, sleep trackers can’t provide an accurate measure of total sleep time. During sleep, it’s harder for the air to go through your respiratory tract because muscles have a tendency to relax/loosen (that’s one of the reasons why we snore). The respiratory tract is hence obstructed, leaving the organism deprived of oxygen. Luckily, the brain is informed of these disruptions and reacts by tightening the muscles of the upper airways to restore the air circulation.


These muscles are attached to a mobile bone, the mandible, which they move when they contract. By recording the movements of the mandible, it’s actually the small muscular adjustments ordered by the brain that we study in real-time.
